This procedure is for the extraction of oil from soybeans using the FOSS 2050 Soxtec Avanti Extraction Unit. After grinding and drying, 2.000 g ± 1% of the sample is placed into an extraction filter bag. The filter bag is then placed into the extraction unit and 70-90 mL of petroleum ether (30-60 or 60-80) is added to the aluminum extraction cups containing each sample. The solvent is boiled and the soluble oil is extracted. After this first step, the sample is raised above the solvent surface and the solvent is allowed to reflux over the sample. When the extraction procedure is complete, the extracted oil is weighed and the percent oil is calculated.
