Crushing and Sieving

Moist samples received for most analyses are dried under forced air at room temperature, followed by crushing and sieving through a 2.0 mm stainless steel sieve.

Samples for ammonium determination are stored frozen or refrigerated until they are sieved to prevent losses to volatilization.  Moisture content is determined when samples are sieved, and results are reported on a dry-weight basis.
