Total Organic Carbon (water)

Total organic carbon is measured using an Elementar TOC Select Combustion Analyzer. This instrument utilizes high temperature combustion to oxidize total carbon to CO2. The CO2 is then measured directly by infrared radiation (IR) detection. Inorganic carbon is commonly removed by acidifying samples with with HCl prior to analysis.  In-line acidification may also be utilized if all three forms (Total, Organic, and Inorganic) are to be quantified.

Total "Bound" Nitrogen (TNb) may also be measured by Electrical Conductivity detection.
