Oil Extraction

This procedure is for the extraction of oil from soybeans and other grains using a Gerhardt SOXTHERM SOX 402 Extraction Unit.   After grinding and drying, 2.000 g ± 1% of sample material is weighed into an extraction filter bag.  The filter bag is then placed into the extraction unit and approximately 120 mL of petroleum ether is added to the  extraction vessel containing the sample. The solvent is boiled and the soluble oil is extracted.  After this first step, the sample is raised above the solvent surface and the solvent is allowed to reflux over the sample.  When the extraction procedure is complete, the extracted oil is weighed and the oil content is calculated by weight.
