Welcome to the Research Analytical Laboratory at the University of Minnesota

The Soil Testing and Research Analytical Laboratories are comprised of two laboratory units operating together as one.

We will be closed on November 26th and 27th (Thurs.-Fri.) for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our florist testing service will run on Tues-Weds of this week. The deadline for receiving florist samples is noon on Tuesday the 24th.

*** Frozen Soil Policy Change: Please see our announcement regarding the submission of frozen soils, effective 10-16-15. ***

The Research Analytical Laboratory serves:

  • university researchers
  • government agencies
  • public service groups

For soil fertility analysis of lawn, garden, and farm field soil samples, as well as greenhouse and florist testing, please visit the Soil Testing Laboratory’s Web page. The services of the Soil Testing Laboratory are available to the general public as well as to researchers.

We provide inorganic chemical analysis for:

  • soil
  • water
  • feeds
  • foods
  • compost
  • plant or animal tissue
  • many other types of materials

We can do all of the work necessary to prepare your samples for analysis. If you are only interested in elemental analysis by ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma), you have the option of doing the sample preparation yourself.
