Plant Analysis Equipment

LECO FP-528 Total Nitrogen Analyzer

This instrument is used to determine Total Nitrogen in plant and other solid materials. It operates on the Dumas method, where the sample is combusted at 850 degrees C in an oxygen rich atmosphere. A 10 mL portion of the combustion gases are scrubbed of water and carbon dioxide and passed through a hot copper column to convert the NOx forms to N2. The resulting nitrogen gas is then measured by thermal conductivity in a helium carrier.

Lachat 8500 Flow Injection Analyzer 

This instrument is used to determine (colorimetrically) the concentration of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphorus, sulfate and chloride in a wide range of plant, soil, water samples and extracts.

LECO S-144DR Sulfur Analyzer

This instrument is used for the determination of sulfur in plant and other solid materials. The sample is burned at approximately 1200 degrees C and the evolved sulfur dioxide is measured by infra-red detection.

Soil Analysis Equipment

Perkin Elmer AAnalyst 100 Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer

Used primarily to determine potassium in ammonium acetate soil extracts. Also can be used for measurement of calcium, magnesium, and sodium in ammonium acetate soil extracts and for zinc, copper, iron and manganese in DTPA soil extracts.

Brinkmann PC 900 Probe Colorimeter

This instrument is used for the colorimetric determination of phosphorus in Bray and Olsen soil extracts. It uses a fiberoptic cable in conjuction with a mirrored tip to determine the absorption of light by a colored solution.

Elementar VarioMAX C/N Analyzer 

This instrument is used for the determination of inorganic and total carbon in soil and other solid materials. For total carbon, the samples are burned at 900 degrees C in an oxygen rich atmosphere and the evolved carbon dioxide is measured by a non-dispersive irfra-red detector. For inorganic carbon, samples are pre-treated with HCl and upon combustion the evolved carbon dioxide is measured by a non-dispersive infrared detector. Organic carbon is determined by difference between total C and inorganic C.

Lachat 8500 Flow Injection Analyzer 

This instrument is used to determine (colorimetrically) the concentration of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphorus, sulfate and chloride in a wide range of plant, soil, water samples and extracts.

Dionex 120 Ion Chromatograph

This instrument is used for anion analysis of Fluoride, Chloride, Nitrate, Nitrite, Bromide, Phosphate, and Sulfate simultaneously on a single sample. Detection limits for most elements are 0.2 mg/l.

Phoenix Dohrmann 8000 Carbon Analyzer

This instrument is used for the analysis of total organic carbon in a water sample. Samples are acidified with phosphoric acid and sparged with nitrogen gas to remove dissolved carbon dioxide. The sample is then injected into an ultrviolet lighted, persulfate filled chamber where the organic material is digested. The evolved carbon dioxide is swept by an oxygen stream to an infrared detector.  Detection limit for TOC is 0.5mg/l.

ICP Analysis

Perkin Elmer Optima 3000 ICP Spectrometer

The Perkin Elmer Optima 3000 ICP Spectrometer is used for the majority of our routine analyses. We use it to analyze up to 27 different elements simultaneously using CCD detectors. It has a nitrogen purge spectrometer box. It is computer controlled for unattended operation with quality contol verification after every 10 sample unknowns.

Perkin Elmer Optima 3000 DV ICP Spectrometer

The Perkin Elmer Optima 3000DV dual view instrument is used for specialized research projects. It provides for simultaneous determination of a suite of anallytes and has wavelengths available for 74 different elements. The torch is mounted horizontally for very sensitive axial viewing, and also can provide radial viewing through the use of a side mirror. It has a nitrogen purge spectrometer box with two CCD detectors. It is capable of metal measurements in the sub-ppb range.
